COMPANY
Athena S.p.A. is a privately owned Italian company, established in 1983 near Milan. Over the years Athena became a worldwide supplier of Single Pigment Concentration (SPC) for the master-batch manufacturing industry.
Athena has a long terms experience in all matters related with pigments and pigment preparations and is nowadays specialized in the production of Single Pigment Concentrations (40-80%) based on inorganic and organic pigments.
INTRODUCTION TO SINGLE PIGMENT CONCENTRATION (SPC)
Single Pigment Concentrations are designed to help the Masterbatch manufacturer in producing tailor-made masterbatch for any kind of application.
Single Pigment Concentrations can be used by producers of masterbatch using single screw extruder and also by masterbatch producers using twin screw extruders with good dispersing effect.
Single pigment concentrations can be used by mixing them with other raw material in granular form in a suitable blender and then extruded and pelletized into a masterbatch. In case you’re in need of mixing Single Pigment Concentrations with raw material in powder, we suggest you to ask for the Single Pigment Concentration in powder form in order to avoid de- mixing of granules and powder in the blender.
It is an advantage to use Single Pigment Concentration instead of the pure pigments, particularly if very thin-section products are to be coloured, if a very high standard of dispersion is required, if the conditions must be dust-free or if the pigment is to be metered automatically.
The use of Single Pigment Concentrations provides:
- High tintorial strength
- More transparency
- Enhance gloss
- Reduction of the use of the pigment concentration
The use of Single Pigment Concentrations of Athena allows the masterbatch producer
- to make speck-free masterbatch
- to reduce the colour variations
- to increase the output of the extruder
- to reduce the cleaning downtimes
- to use less rinsing and cleaning materials and so less cleaning waste is produced
- to have a very high industrial hygiene
The Single Pigment Concentrations of Athena provide a regular colour strength and help the customer in many critical application such as:
- Thin blow moulding
- High quality injection moulding
- Film
- Fibre
- Laminates
Athena S.p.A. produces a large range of pigment dispersions of both pigments and dyes. Pigments and dyes are selected with regard to the plastics to be coloured and the conditions to be met by the final product.
TEST METHODS
- To first verify the properties of a pigment dispersion it is necessary to evaluate colour shade (ΔL, Δa, Δb, ΔE - CIELAB) and tintorial strength against the pure pigment in a TiO2 reduced pigment-resin system. This evaluation is always joined by an evaluation in full shade, black reduction and for some pigments a blue reduction.
- Not all the pigments are evaluated under the same reduction pigment-resin system
- To check the level of dispersion of a pigment in the medium the standard control provides a visual control on LDPE film with 3% of the dispersion
- For the products involved in the fibre industry or under a specific requirement by the customer, the filter test value is carried out to check the dispersion level of the pigment under the norm EN 13900-5
- Since 2003 Athena is ISO 9001:2008 certified
PRODUCTS
PE
The biggest part of our dispersions is based on LDPE and is designed for the Masterbatch industry and the compound industry. In this range you can find both organic and inorganic pigments.
The different concentration of the pigment is due to the different characteristic of the pigment itself, such as specific gravity, easy dispersability, final use.
Most inorganic pigments are dispersed at a concentration of 60% into the vehicle while the organic pigments are normally dispersed at 40% concentration.
Some organic pigments are dispersed at 25% concentration, because of the high tintorial strength of the pigment itself.

NRC
Nature:
organic and inorganic pigments in optimum distribution in a mixture with a blend of polymers designed for its high compatibility with several rubber types.
Physical form
Granules or powder
Packaging:
25 Kg anonymous plastic bag for granules
20 Kg anonymous plastic bag for powder
Application
MB NRC preparations are added to the rubber mix together with extenders, vulcanization additives etc.. then the mixture is produced and finished as usual.
In case of colouring mixtures already finished, a short pass over the roll mill and/or another one with a narrower gap are surely appropriate to distribute the pigments. In this case we suggest to use the product in powder form.
Technical data
Colour stability during vulcanization
MB NRC preparations are stable under common processing conditions in both hot and cold vulcanization.
Fastness to migration:
The pigments contained in MB NRC preparations are insoluble in rubber. There is practically no potential for migration.
Fastness to light
In common concentrations, MB NRC preparations are well to outstandingly fast to light, disregarding the coloration of the rubber mixture itself
Coloristic properties
MB NRC preparations are strong in colour and yield vivid pure shades.
Resistance to aging
MB NRC preparations do not adversely affect the aging of the rubber coloured with them. In production, great care is taken to keep them free of any rubber poisons.
Description
MB NRC products are highly concentrated. Since pigment agglomerates have already been predispersed and thus the amount of dispersion required has been greatly reduced.
MB NRC preparations simplify the dispersion process.
Optimum dispersion facilitates full development of colour strength and results in a homogeneous coloration.
Shade variations, which may occur when processing parameters are changed or corrected, are effectively avoided.
In addition, MB NRC preparations allow speck-free coloration, since the main reason for colour specks – poorly dispersed pigment agglomerates – has been eliminated by the dispersion step during manufacture of the preparation.
MB NRC preparations can therefore be used directly in applications where high quality standards are required.
MB NRC preparations offer potential for substantial cost savings through reduced soiling and improved industrial hygiene. Furthermore, the different forms of supply (granules and powder) allow problems with user-specific metering systems to be largely eliminated.
Cleaning times for metering and mixing units are reduced, less rinsing and cleaning materials are required, and less cleaning waste is produced.
